About JL Barbecue

JL Barbecue is a veteran owned and operated establishment that was created due to my love for cooking and feeding people. We are located in Oak Point, Texas, and have been officially operating since 2022. We specialize in Texas-style barbecue, slow smoked over post oak wood in a traditional offset smoker.

Several people have asked what the JL in our name stands for. This journey started several years ago with a man, a German Shepherd named Josie, a smoker, and absolutely no idea what I was doing. Over time and many cooks I learned what worked and what didn't. The one thing that was consistent from day one of my first smoke: Josie was always by my side during every cook. While this wasn't really any different than anywhere else I went, it seemed so special to me. Years later and after a lot of encouragement from friends and family, I got the wheels rolling on getting this business started. Right before it was to become official Josie was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer with no cure. Typically, by the time symptoms are noticed it's too late for treatment. Josie was with us for two more weeks before she lost her fight. Since her diagnosis, I've spent countless hours researching this disease and have discovered that very little is known about it. There are a few studies and trials being performed but they're still years out. I decided to change the name to JL for Josie's Legacy in honor of my smoking buddy and best friend. Further, when the dust settles from everything that's gone on this summer, I'll be creating a non-profit organization to not only honor Josie's memory, but to provide funding for research and payment assistance for families who can't afford to pay for treatment for their dogs post-diagnosis.
